Meet and Greets

October 2017

We’re excited to announce a series of meet and greets with Pastor Leah! The purpose for these events is for Leah to get to know you all better, with a particular focus on what PACC means for you and your hopes and dreams for our future together.

To facilitate quality conversation, spaces are limited. You can sign up online by using the link on the next page; at church in the narthex; or by calling the church office. We want to make sure everyone who is interested attends, so if these events max out we will do another series in the spring.

If you plan to attend the new member class on Oct. 8, we will cover meet and greet material as part of our class so that you don’t have to come twice!

Sermon Series Schedule 

October 2017

In October we continue a sermon series on Spiritual Practices – focusing not so much on traditional disciplines like fasting, prayer, or worship but on practicing internal attitudes that open us up to God’s transformative presence in our lives. This series will continue through October 29th, when we will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation and talk about what reformation means for us today. We hope you will join us throughout the series!

There is a lot going on at Park Avenue this month, and lots to be excited about! As the days shorten and the leaves begin to change, I’d like to highlight a few ways I’ll be connecting with the congregation this month.

Our Sermon Series on Spiritual Practices continues on Sunday mornings this month and next. See the next page for the schedule. Talking about spiritual practices is a way for us to explore attitudes that will help us deepen our faith, while reminding us that we don’t have to get it perfect – we can keep practicing. I’m excited to discover these together with you and to hear what practices keep you connected to God. Drop me a line to share!

We’re also doing a series of Meet and Greets in the months of October and November so that I can get to know you all better. See the schedule and ways to sign up on the next page. We’ll start off with some socializing and refreshments, then share a conversation about what PACC means to you, about your hopes and dreams for our future together. These conversations will be a way for me to hear what matters to you most and to begin to discern where God might be leading us.

Bible Study is up and running on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. We’ll be digging into the book of Jonah this fall. Do you have to literally believe that Jonah survived three days inside a fish to get something out of this story? What can Jonah teach us about crankiness and compassion? And what does Jonah have in common with the Simpsons? Come find out!

I hope you’ll join us for one or more of these events so that I can get to know you better. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to reach out to me with questions, comments, or just to talk!

PACC Concert Series 

October 8, 2017, 3pm

The 27th Season of the PACC Concert Series will begin in October with two concerts that month: Sunday, October 8th at 3 PM with Robert 

Simonds, Principal Second Violin of the Louisville Orchestra with a concert of Baroque, Americana & contemporary violin solos; Sisters in Life, Sisters in Song on Sunday October 29th concert (rescheduled from last winter due to storms). Tickets will go on sale during Coffee Hour starting September 17th.

PACC Family and Friends Creative Art Show 

October 1 and 8, 2017

After two very successful Art Shows, last fall and spring, of works created by our PACC Family and friends, we are once again planning to have a display of art work. At this time, we are planning to have the art works on display on the first and second Sundays in October, October 1st and 8th in the Fellowship Room at PACC. Submissions can be of any and all types of creative artistic expression, from all levels, beginners to advanced. This includes, but is not limited to painting, charcoal, mixed media, watercolor, collages, pencil drawings, poetry, stenciling, quilting, clay/pottery, origami, sculptures, handicrafts, photography, and all types of free expressions. It has been suggested that you might want to think of something that reminds you of PACC and we will try to use it on the cover of our weekly bulletin.

Children, as well as adults and all those in between, are encouraged to submit their creations for display. Those planning to submit pieces will be asked to submit a form describing their art and the size of their art piece as soon as possible (available in the narthex). We are asking that art submissions be brought to church on Sunday, September 24th or that you arrange with Gwen Phelps, 617-966-2670, to get the pieces to her before Saturday, September 30th so she can arrange the display set-up.

We will be having a reception for our artists on the first Sunday in October during coffee hour, and will then leave the display up for those to see who might have missed church the first Sunday. Invite family and friends to join us in seeing the Art Show.

Knitting Group 

Bring your handcrafts and join us on Tuesday, September 12 and 26 from 7:30-9 in the Fellowship room. Some of us are knitting red scarves for Foster Care to Success, an organization that helps support young adults who have been in foster care. We’ll send our scarves from PACC in early November if you’d like to contribute a scarf. Details at:

Women’s Guild 

September 21, 2017

Women’s Guild resumes their regularly scheduled meetings this month. We meet on the third Thursday of each month at 11:30 for lunch and fellowship. The ladies bring their own brown bag lunch and our hostesses provide beverages and chips, and a dessert. All women of the congregation are cordially invited to join us.

PACC Men 

The PACC-Men will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Room on Tuesday, Sept. 5th.

We will watch the “New Vistas for Television” episode of “Prospects of Mankind with Eleanor Roosevelt” a WGBH Boston Video, 1962 (1 hour).

The panel considers whether the television of the future will be a wasteland of mediocre programming or a vital conduit of culture. Host: Eleanor Roosevelt; co-host: Marya Mannes; Interviewees: Newton Minow, then-Chairman of then-Federal Communications Commission; John F. White, then-President of the National Educational Television and Radio Center; Irving Gitlin, then-Executive Producer, Creative Projects, NBC.

We will also discuss our programming for the coming year and share light refreshments and dessert. Please let Mike Rich know what snacks or beverages you will bring and if you need transportation.

Sarah’s Circle 

September 23, 2017

Another year has come and gone, and it is time to celebrate our Sarah’s Circle sisterhood with our annual Anniversary Pot Luck Luncheon! If there are some of you who have not been attending due to other life priorities, we hope you will be able to join us for our luncheon and throughout the coming year. We will be meeting on Saturday, September 23rd (a little later than normal) from 11 AM until 1 PM, and the location still to be determined within the next few weeks. Please contact Merrith Sabo-Jones if you plan to attend.
