Christian Education (CE) Director Job Description – June 2022

Park Avenue Congregational Church, UCC, Arlington, MA, an Open and Affirming Congregation, seeks a part-time Christian Education Director.  At the heart of what PACC offers is a warm welcome and a sense of belonging to all who come through our doors. All of the duties described below ultimately work toward this goal: cultivating a positive, nurturing, healthy relationship with children, youth, and their families so that church becomes a place where they feel loved, valued, and nurtured on their faith journey. At this moment in our church family’s life, we seek a CE Director with the skills to creatively build and sustain our CE Program in the big picture and in the week-to-week (bold ideas welcome!), while also developing strong relationships with our children, youth, and families.   

The primary functions are in the areas of:

  • Sunday School planning, administration, and oversight
  • Youth fellowship, service, and faith
  • Sunday services, special services, and church events
  • Overall administrative and budgetary responsibilities

Applicants for the position should have a commitment to progressive Christian faith; ability to work with youth and children and concern for nurturing them; strong listening skills; a desire to collaborate while also working well independently; and sincere interest in others.  Applicants should be familiar with and comfortable working in a church environment, demonstrate strong organizational skills, have strong written and oral communication skills, be punctual, have discretion and the ability to maintain complete confidentiality of sensitive information, and have excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills with diverse individuals (age, race/ethnicity, prior religious background, gender, sexual orientation, disability status, etc.), including a positive attitude, and sense of humor. 

The job requires approximately 20-25 hours per week, September to June, and 10-15 hours per week in the summer months.  Salary-based compensation (50% FTE) with paid vacation and sick leave. College degree or equivalent work-related experience required, ideally including at least 3-5 years’ experience working with children. Experience with a religious organization or similar nonprofit a plus. Submit a cover letter and resume to:
